Sonata Plug-In’s Advanced Powertrain Earns Spot on Ward’s 10 Best Engines List

Now in its 22nd year, Ward's 10 Best Engines is known for helping define industry engine standards, so it was exciting to learn that the 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle was included on this year's list. Notable is the fact that this is the first time a PHEV powertrain has made the list.

Hyundai's PHEV Sonata is motivated by a 154-horsepower 2.0-liter Nu four-cylinder GDI engine. It is unique in that it uses a six-speed auto transmission with a 50kW electric motor, instead of the more common torque converter.

“For Hyundai’s first entry into the plug-in hybrid segment, Hyundai engineers did an impeccable job blending fuel efficiency with refinement and daily usability,” said Drew Winter, editor-in-chief, WardsAuto World magazine. “Transitions between all-electric and hybrid modes are completely seamless, something that drivers will undoubtedly appreciate on long journeys, and the six-speed automatic transmission gives drivers a greater sense of connection, compared with other hybrids in the segment.”

The achievement is perhaps most notable because this is the first time a PHEV powertrain has made the list.
